To add words to the Nepali Wiktionary, please follow the following steps:
- Step 1: If you haven’t registered an account yet, Register/Create an account in Wiktionary using this open an account link
- Step 2: Once registered, log in to your account using Login link
- Step 3: Look for a word in Nepali Wiktionary by typing the very word in the search box. If the word is already listed then, it will show the description of the word as follows:
If the word is not listed in the Wiktionary, it gives an option to add the word. For example, I looked for the word “सन्चो ” and since it is not available in the Wiktionary, it gives an option to add the word by saying “तपाईं यस विकिमा “सन्चो“ शव्द जोड़्न सक्नुहुन्छ।” as follows:
As in the above image, once you click on the word in red color it takes you to the Wiki page to add the content about the word as follows:

To come up with a word to check if it has been added to the Nepali Wiktionary or not, you can either search for the most common Nepali words that come to your mind or you can take references from the following online resources:
- 1000-most-common-Nepali-words: This small table has 1000 most common Nepali words. You can start by picking words from this table and put the very word in the search box of Nepali Wiktionary and see if that word is available on Wiktionary or not. If not, you can add the word and its content in the above-mentioned format. To fill the content of the word such as various meanings, parts of speech, pronunciation/phonetics, and examples, you can use the following two online resources. However, please do not copy the examples or meaning line by line. When you copy make sure that you write them in your own words to prevent copyright issues.
- A Practical Dictionary of modern Nepali. (uchicago.edu): This online Nepali dictionary has various meanings of the word, its pronunciation, phonetics, use in sentence examples, derived terms (व्युत्पन्न सर्तहरू), synonyms (समानार्थी शब्द), etc. which can be very helpful while writing the content about words.
- https://nepalishabdakosh.com/: This online Nepali dictionary can be very useful to know all possible meanings of the words along with their parts of speech.
- Step 4: Once you add the content of the word in the wikitext format, you are recommended to first see the preview by clicking on “पुर्वालोकन देखाउनुहोस्” and once the entry looks correct to you then, click on “पृष्ठ प्रकाशित गर्ने” to publish the word entry as shown in the figure below:
